UmiZoomi Week

I've been collecting things for my prop boxes to start my imagination lessons next week so this week I let Drew decide what we learned.  Of course when I asked him what we should play he said UmiZoomi.  When I asked him where we should go he said UmiCity.  So that's what we did.

Of course we did the UmiZoomi work books that he got for Christmas.

I also made magnets from the Shape Bandit and we acted out that episode a lot.  I printed these from NickJr.com then laminated them with clear contact paper and glued them onto those free magnets that you get from take out places and dentists offices. If your child likes any Nick Jr. show check out the website.  I thought it was just online games but there are so many amazing printables that go along with the shows.  I was pleasantly surprised.

We visited UmiCity (not really but he thinks Chicago is UmiCity because of the tall buildings)

We counted, a lot.  We counted items, how long we waited in line, counted down with the microwave, counted people, pets, houses.

We estimated.  I put out a tray of pompoms and had Drew guess how many were there.  He pretty much guessed 3 every time but we are working on estimating.  Sometimes when there were 20 pom pom balls he would just tell me there's a whole bunch.

We went to IKEA and used the paper tape measures to measure furniture, just like Milli :)

We built an UmiCity with our blocks and had our cars race around it.

We made this cool styrofoam paint block craft.  I used the top and bottom of a take out container we had in the fridge.  If you've seen UmiZoomi you'll know that everything has patterns and pictures in it.  Even just a plain tree trunk isn't brown it's brown with patterns in it.  I thought we could make this then cut it out to be something else, but Drew wanted to make the 100 brick wall, so that's what we did, except we made the 10 brick wall :)

our print!! It worked!

Drew doing the next one

So exciting!!!

We worked on patterns with out pompom tray and matching with the Nick Jr. printables and our memory game

Normally I wouldn't be thrilled about a TV show theme but this is the only show Drew really watches and LOVES!  He carries around his little magnets like they are his best friends and he really is picking up some good skills and applying them to his own world, not just watching them on TV.  I actually think we watched less TV this week because when he wanted to get his UmiZoomi fix he played with his stuff instead of asking to watch a show.  This week was a big success!

Come back next week for my very first prop box week, The Post Office!   I can't wait to share it with you.  I've been collecting stuff all week and have some really fun new art projects too since I've been lacking on those lately!

  1. I think Umizoomi is a great show for teaching math skills and my kids have loved the math kits too. I thought I'd seen every episode, but I'm not familiar with the Shape Bandit... Will have to see if I can find it somewhere. I'm sure the kids will love it. Sounds like you had a great week!

We don't have cable, so I have not heard of Umizoomi. Wonder if Netflix has it...
